Hip and valley rafters

Hip and valley rafters should be about 50 mm (2 in.) deeper than common rafters (Figures 83, 85 and 87). This additional depth provides full contact with the angle-cut of the jack rafters. In hip roofs, the jack rafters are nailed to the hip rafters and wall plate. Where a valley occurs, nail the jack rafters to the valley rafter and ridge.
